A man was killed and two others injured in a mob beating over suspected theft in Kamalganj upazila, Moulvibazar early today.
The incident occurred around 2:30am at the residence of Union Parishad (UP) member Saleh Ahmed in the Nurjahan Tea Garden area of the upazila.
The deceased, identified as Alal Mia, 45, from Gotatikar village in Sylhet’s Moglabazar area, was beaten to death by local residents, said Shamim Akonji, officer-in-charge (Investigation) at Kamalganj Police Station.
Two injured robbers, Abdul Malek, 41, and Jasim Mia, 38, both from Sreepur village in Kamalganj, were handed over to the police and are now receiving treatment at Moulvibazar 250 Bed District Sadar Hospital.
UP member Saleh Ahmed said that a group of 10–12 people gathered around his house around 2:00am, preparing for the robbery.
Local tea workers noticed the robbers and raised the alarm, prompting villagers to surround the suspects. When the robbers resisted, the mob beat them up indiscriminately.
As Alal fainted, some locals took him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Jasim Mia was injured and handed over to police, and Abdul Malek was later found hiding in the tea garden.
Police said blood traces in the area helped track him down.
Sejul Mia, 37, from Longurpar village was also detained.
The OC said that the detained individuals were involved in multiple robbery cases across Sylhet division.
Police recovered locally-made weapons from the scene and have detained three individuals in connection with the robbery attempt.
A case is being prepared at Kamalganj Police Station.
